Michael Nutt BA MBA MTS MTMI, Principal Consultant

With over 30 years’ management and marketing experience, Michael Nutt is a freelance management consultant specialising in the fields of tourism, heritage and the arts. During a highly successful and varied career, he has led, marketed or fund-raised for a wide range of not-for-profit, charitable and public sector organisations.

He offers expertise in business planning, strategy development, marketing, fund-raising and business management, and his background has included the regeneration, development and marketing of major heritage projects; destination marketing; orchestral management; museums management and the promotion of national museum exhibitions and heritage sites.

Michael has been responsible for marketing some of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, including the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Air Force Museum and the National Fishing Heritage Centre. He was the founding director of Explosion! , the award-winning Millennium Commission funded museum of naval firepower in Hampshire.

From 2005 to 2009 Michael was Managing Director of VisitNorwich Limited, the destination management organisation for the Norwich area, which brought together marketing, conference bureau, tourist information and city centre management within one membership body. He also has tourism destination management and economic development experience in local government on Humberside and Portsmouth Harbour.

As well as the museum sector, Michael has worked in the arts with the Bournemouth Orchestras and with the BBC in national radio. He has also spent some time in the crafts world in a fund-raising role for the Parnham Trust, the educational charity of the celebrated furniture designer, John Makepeace.

As a consultant, Michael works both independently and as an Associate with other practices, notably A Different View. Tourism projects have included production of a Destination Management Plan for the Waveney Valley, proposals for a new destination marketing organisation for the North Norfolk Coast and a feasibility study for the Basingstoke Canal Centre in Surrey. Heritage projects include a successful £2.7 million Heritage Lottery Fund bid for the Crossness Engines Trust, business planning for a Stage 2 HLF bid for Shakespeare’s Schoolroom, Stratford-on-Avon and a site options appraisal for the British Postal Museum and Archive. Arts projects have included coordination of and fundraising for the Benjamin Britten Centenary celebrations in Norfolk and Suffolk in 2012-2013, an audience development project for Arts Council England East and marketing support for Triorca, a new international youth orchestra.

Michael holds an MBA from the Open University, a postgraduate Diploma in Arts Administration from the City University and a BA Honours degree in Music and Sociology from the University of Keele. He is a member of the Tourism Management Institute, the Tourism Society and the Association of Independent Museums.
